How to identify a Woodland? A woodland is a habitat where trees are the dominant plant form. The individual tree canopies usually overlap and interconnect, often forming a continuous canopy which shades the ground to varying degrees. However, woodlands are not just trees, depending on how much light reaches the ground through the tree canopy, there will be a vast variety of other plants. These plants include mosses, ferns, and lichens as well as small flowering herbs, grasses and shrubs. The different types of plants will encourage different types of animals ranging from herbivores to carnivores. The rotting wood and decaying leaf litter offer an alternative food source for a large variety of invertebrates and the quantity of dead organic material provide the ideal habitat for fungi and bacteria to flourish. River Leven Walk by Renton is only one of the many woodlands that can be found in West Dunbartonshire.

The habitats are mainly semi-natural, although subject to heavy impacts from medium industries
